A Letter to Christmas
Dear Christmas,
You have always been my favorite time of the year, for too many reasons to count. You usually bring along with you a quilt of snow that decorates our roofs, our lawns, and the trees. Some people dislike the snow that comes, but I love it. To me, it’s always paired with a sense of peace. Everything seems to be a little bit quieter, a little bit calmer. It makes the world feel like it’s standing still. The snow also causes more light. In a season where the days are shorter and the nights are darker, the slightest moonlight reflects off this white covering and helps those dark nights feel just a little bit brighter.
You also bring people together. It’s a time where friends and family (at least attempt) to put their differences aside for a short while, and celebrate together. To look back on the year with joy, and recognize each other's accomplishments. Despite the cold temperatures that you are paired with, there is always such warmth to be felt with you.
You are my favorite time of the year, Christmas. But some people don’t feel that way. While I feel a warmth and I notice the light, some people feel the cold and only see the dark. There are a lot of reasons Christmas can be hard. For example, it can be a hard time when you have lost loved ones, and it can be a reminder that they are still gone. Yet, I hope people come to see the beauty in this. That we have a chance to mourn, to cherish what once was, and learn from those moments and those people. We have the chance to look deeper into our own lives.
Most of all, Christmas, I love you for what you remind us of. You are the celebration of the birth of our Christ Jesus. A day that without it, we would still be imprisoned in our ways. You are a reminder of how great God’s love for us truly is. A reminder of what He did. That He sent His only son, a pure and innocent child, into this cruel world, to eventually take on our punishment as His own. You are a reminder of our purpose in this life. To love like Jesus.
So, Christmas, I hope that you continue to spread the warmth I always feel in you. The warmth I feel in the white snow, in the joy of loved ones, in the beautiful sorrows, and most of all, in Jesus.
Sincerely, me
